Baldwin has a strong theatrical tradition. In addition to providing a variety of performance opportunities, Baldwin fosters an appreciation of the creative process and a strong understanding of the collaborative nature of the arts.
In Lower School students enjoy the opportunity to perform in grade level productions orchestrated each year by their classroom teachers. Production material includes folktales, fairytales and original scripts written by the students themselves. We collaborate with the music department for these grade-level productions, and performing the songs in a dramatic context is often a highlight for our girls.
Theater is integral to the life of a Middle School student at Baldwin. Drama in Grade 6 introduces the fundamentals of performance. In Grades 7 & 8, our girls can explore acting, directing and playwriting. Theatrical opportunities abound through participation in Drama Club, Arts League and the Middle School Play.
When you speak of theater to a Baldwin student, she will speak ardently of Maskers. One of Baldwin’s longest running organizations, Maskers provides creative support for two productions a year. Learn about our . Students in Upper School can choose from a variety of elective classes to expand their experience in theater - everything from acting and improvisation to playwriting. Baldwin theater students have been honored for their participation in the Greater Philadelphia Cappies, the English Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition and the Philadelphia Young Playwrights Festival.
